Kenai was whelped 12/20/2007 in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. I had been watching the APLA classifieds for over a year since the passing of my previous pointing lab, Majac's Eight-ball. Finally finding the breeding that I wanted between GMPR Wannamaker's Hot Tub SH and GMPR Jim's Bearpoint Belle, I flew to Oklahoma and picked out Kenai personally. He had energy, drive, and smarts that I thought set him a little bit apart from the other pups in a really good litter. Two of his littermates, Sunday's Arrowpoint Black Beauty (Bea) and Lockdown Labs Pipin Hot Arrowpoint (Piper) have gone on to be Multiple GMPR's.
All I wanted was a chance to get the best hunting dog possible. I had no plans to hunt test him at that time. I sent him to Dale Swiderski at Hunter's Rose Kennels http://www.huntersrosekennel.homestead.com for some basic training and the rest is history. Kenai advanced so quickly that I kept sending him back to training just to see how far he could go. He was a CPR at 9 months, an APR the next spring, and got his GMPR the following fall at less than two years old. He had also got his HR title along the way.
He has since got his HRCH and MH titles. He qualified for the Master National in 2011 by passing 7 of 8 Master Hunter tests in that year.
Kenai got his 4XGMPR title in Wisconsin in the spring of 2011, going out in style by posting a perfect retrieving score and tearing up the upland field in his signature style.
Kenai ran the APLA hunt test circuit again in 2013 just for fun and to run with 4 of his pups as they got their GMPR titles. He went 8 for 8 including a couple of tests in which I handled him myself. This makes him (unofficially) the only 8 X GMPR in APLA history (2 passes per title level).
He also competed in the Crosswinds Pointing Dog Challenge, which ran pointing labs in braces heads up against traditional pointing breeds. He tied his brace with one of the best German Shorthairs, and the best opposing handler, in the competition. Both dogs pointed and retrieved 3 birds in the allotted time. Against all expectations, the pointing labs won the competition handily. A couple of Kenai pups also competed. For a slideshow, copy this code to your browser address window and press enter. Kenai is the sire of several multiple GMPRs, lots of CPR's, several dogs titled in other venues, BDC dogs, and dozens of darn fine hunting dogs whose owners choose not to test or compete.
Kenai lives in Harrison, Michigan when he isn't in training. He hunts ducks, grouse, and pheasant whenever I can get the time off from work in California. I also will occasionally take him to California to hunt duck and quail. He sometimes is used as a guide dog at Tails-A-Waggin' Acres Hunting Preserve in Marion, Michigan. http://www.preservehunt.com/
